Meet Our Board

Jason Guthrie

President

Jason has been a part of Early Alert Canines since its inception. He joined the board in 2018, and his passion and enthusiasm for EAC are abundant. Jason was a member of the U.S. Navy, attended Submarine School in Groton, CT, as well as culinary school in San Diego, CA. He was stationed aboard the USS Hawkbill (SSN-666) for 3 years, until his diagnosis with T1D at the age of 21, at which point he was medically retired. He then attended Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA where he studied marketing. He works in sales and marketing at Leisure Supply in Sacramento. He has worked in sales for over 30 years, and has traveled the country with his D.A.D., Eli, for the past decade.

Jason grew up between Santa Cruz and Sacramento, CA, and has two successful adult children, Samantha, 27, and Travis, 23, whom he loves dearly.

Jason knows the effect a D.A.D. can have on a life, and knows he wouldn't be here today without his dog. "[Eli] has kept me safe and or saved my life on many occasions and I know the impact a dog like mine has on a T1s life first hand!"

Dr. Kim Bercovitz, DMV

Secretary

Dr. Kim Bercovitz has been on the board of EAC since 2012. She is an Easy Bay native, and owns her own veterinary practice in Castro Valley, Castro Valley Companion Animal Hospital. She attended University of California at Davis where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She went on to receive her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. Ever the local gal, she returned to Castro Valley to establish her practice in the field, helping animals and their human caretakers alike.

Dr. B, as her clients like to call her, lives in Castro Valley with her husband, two children, and four dogs. Dr. B enjoys camping, reading with her book group, and spending quality time with her “fur” and “not-furred” kids.

John Alecca

Board Member

John has been involved in Early Alert Canines since 2012, and has been on our board since 2018. He is  the Executive Director of the nonprofit Young Audiences of Northern California - a 60-year-old arts education provider to the nine SF Bay Area Counties. His education comes from both sides of the country, including the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, Golden Gate University, and UC Berkeley Extension.

John and his husband of 43 years moved to San Francisco in 1978. He has had long term involvement within the arts and LGBTQ communities, and is a passionate fan of rugby (Go Bears!). He also loves Hawaii, hiking, and camping.

"Every child deserves to be a kid... Every parent should have the security that they are providing a nurturing and secure environment for their children to thrive and grow as children.  Early Alert Canines can, in our small way, provide the comfort in knowing that as parent of a Type 1 Diabetic Child you are NOT alone."

Wes Matsuura

Board Member

Wes was born and raised in the Bay Area.  He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Sacramento State University.  He returned to the Bay Area where he started his career with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.   He retired as a Lieutenant after a 34 year career with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in 2018.

Wes’ wife, a Type 1 diabetic, was placed with her Early Alert Canine, Moody, in 2015.  Wes has been on the EAC Board of Directors since 2016.  As the one Board member who has an EAC in household, Wes has intimate knowledge and experience with the level of awareness the canine provides to the potentially life threatening fluctuations in glucose levels.
